 what was your GOAT Lee ?

This question threw me for a loop! But after some time to dwell on it, for me, it has to be humble but mighty Pogs… hear me out:

Simplicity: Literally just a piece of cardboard (or plastic) with a graphic. The fact such a simple invention dominated recess and the collective imagination of 90s kids can’t be understated.

Accessibility: Pogs were super easy to collect. The tubes, boxes and blister packs were cheap. And if you were saving pocket money for something else, you could still pick up Pogs through packs of chips (like Tazos) and under the bottle caps of drinks.

Utility: Collect (both Pogs and the awesome Slammers!), play or both, it was up to you - many kids even gambled with them. The sudden realisation of gutting loss, as your opponent flipped them with a signature edition Slammer - haunts to this day. Although a little basic, the game still holds up as pretty fun - we ran a deep dive on how to play if you’re interested in a refresher.

The original Multi-Verse?: Or at least one of the first showcases of it! Every 90s IP worth a damn was printed on Pogs. Pokémon, Power Rangers, Simpsons, Dragon Ball, Looney Tunes, various sports (etc, etc, etc)… every kid has such diverse collections.

Still cheap in 2024: Like me, if you’ve been inspired to build a burgeoning collection of 90s toys - second hand Pogs are super cheap on ebay. Some of the sealed stuff gets up there, but Pogs are a no-brainer add to any collection.

Fun fact, the World Pog Federation is still around and sells limited edition Pog boxes.

Pogs are legendary.

I was too uncoordinated to play with Moon Shoes, but there was an indoor toy that appealed to my sticky, slimy childhood preferences…

GAK!
